Sizewell C: where 7,900 workers will sleep

Sizewell C expects around 7,900 workers on site at the peak of construction, and says roughly a third of them will come from the local area. The rest need a bed in east Suffolk for weeks or months at a time, on a build that is expected to last up to twelve years.

What the project provides

A 2,400-room accommodation campus is being built on site, and caravan and holiday-park accommodation takes more. Sizewell C also runs a free Accommodation Management System that matches its workers with local accommodation, and asks providers for evidence of gas, electrical and fire safety compliance.

That still leaves thousands of people renting in the private market, in a part of the country where much of the furnished stock is holiday lets.

Where crews actually stay

  • Saxmundham: the closest town with a supermarket and a station, about a quarter of an hour from the site.
  • Leiston and Aldeburgh: the nearest towns to the site.
  • Framlingham and Halesworth: market towns around 25 minutes out, with more family houses.
  • Lowestoft and Ipswich: 45 to 50 minutes, where larger groups can usually be housed together.

It is not only Sizewell

Onshore works for the East Anglia TWO and ONE North wind farms are under way around Friston, and two further grid schemes, Sea Link and LionLink, are proposed for the same area. East Suffolk Council has consulted on accommodation guidance because of the combined pressure these projects put on local housing.

What to ask before you book

  • Is it one bed per person, or are doubles being counted twice?
  • Is there parking for a van, not just a car?
  • Who do you call when the boiler stops at nine at night?
  • Can the booking be extended by phone if the programme moves?

We run houses in Saxmundham, Little Glemham, Framlingham and Halesworth, all inside half an hour of the site, and we answer all four of those questions before you ask.
